Our knowledge is sparse and formulaic, a litany of tropes recycled through catalogue entries and museum labels: a chronology measured in decades, his contribution to the evolution of the shaped cross (croce sagomata), and the “pathetism” of certain figures. Yet it is possible that even at this early date—at the very moment of “origins”—the painter possessed a sense of professional mandate that was neither simple nor “naive,” despite the condescension of later eras.

A singular detail emerges here, in the Crucifixion held by the Uffizi in Florence. On the left tabellone—the lateral panels of the shaped cross typically depicting scenes from the Life and Passion of Christ—the Master depicts the Three Holy Women visiting the tomb on the third day. Drawing from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John, as well as apocryphal texts and Paschal devotional literature (the Paschal Canon, liturgical hymns, etc.), the artist captures the moment they find the sepulcher empty. Instead, they encounter the Angel announcing the Resurrection and the Roman soldiers dazzled by the divine radiance. The women behold the linen cloths (othonia) lying on the ground and the shroud that had wrapped Christ (soudarion), folded neatly in a corner—though here, tellingly, it hangs upon the wall. This cloth is what tradition identifies as the Shroud: the image of Christ not rendered by human hand, but acheiropoieta—revealed, rather than painted.

In this instance, the soudarion is rendered in celestial blue—a detail absent from the Gospel of John, yet heavy with symbolic intent. It possesses the hue of the heavens; it participates in the Resurrection itself.

The Angel in the Master’s painting makes a specific gesture toward the shroud while pointing into the void of the tomb. In doing so, he provides a commentary—or perhaps an instruction—to the Christian painter (as the Master surely defined himself) regarding his vocation: to adhere faithfully, in form as in heart, to the image Christ left of Himself, “painted” through His own suffering and Passion. In the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the motif of St. Luke painting the Virgin would more commonly serve to remind artists of this sacred obligation.

The Roman soldiers are described by the Master with a touch of irony: a muddled heap of armor intermingled with abandoned limbs. Wrapped in a gray mantle of shadow, they stand in stark opposition to the luminosity of the linens. Here, the Kingdom of Shadow and the Kingdom of Grace confront each other in purely visual terms.

<div The figure: not a hermit, but maybe an artist? Who can say. It is sometimes interpreted as the artist’s alter ego, despairing—or prone to despair—over the unattainable grandeur of Antiquity. Is that, then, a vision of Rome in the background? We should, regardless, be wary of excessive “autobiographical” reading.

Rome “rediscovered” and reinvented, in those years, under the guidance of Raphael as praefectus marmorum et lapidum omnium, so named by Pope Leo X on August 27, 1515: a circumstance Polidoro knew well. Indeed, between 1517 and 1518, he took part in the decoration of the Vatican Logge, coordinated by Raphael himself.

The drawing dates to 1524, when Polidoro—having been in Naples between 1523 and 1524 to work on the Stories of Psyche for the poet and humanist Berardino Rota (the scene of Psyche Welcomed on Mount Olympus, c. 1524, now in the Louvre, remains from that cycle; see below)—had likely returned to Rome. It documents the refined yearning for Antiquity that characterized the Rome of Leo X on the eve of the Sacco of 1527; with the spectral, almost hooked line of the hair and drapery, it seems to foreshadow atmospheres ranging from the Neoclassical to the Romantic (reminiscent of Füssli, as it were). A dream, perhaps, but of one who does not rest—who sleeps, rather, tormented as if by labor pains.

The grandiosity of the staging and the heroic body, the calculated pathos, the swiftness and flawlessness of execution—that is, the sprezzatura demonstrated by Polidoro—grant this gouache a supreme rank even among the elite ranks of works on paper between the Renaissance and Mannerism.

1561 and 1565, an extraordinary chamber emerged within the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence: the Sala delle Carte Geografiche (“Hall of Maps”). This space was consecrated to the burgeoning corpus of geographical knowledge and the Renaissance impetus for travel, “discovery,” and exploration. The project was a multidisciplinary collaboration involving artists, geographers, cabinetmakers, and sculptors, commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici under the rigorous artistic direction of Giorgio Vasari and the cosmographical guidance of the monk Fra’ Miniato Pitti.

Beyond the decisive contributions of Pitti, the conceptualization of the fifty-three extant panels was entrusted to two monks. These maps illustrate the totality of the oikumene as it was then understood, encompassing the torrid intertropical zones as well as the Arctic and Antarctic regions. This cartographic achievement represents a profound expansion of perspectives relative to the geographical paradigms of Antiquity.

Indeed, the burgeoning divergence between Ancient and Modern thought is an implicit theme of this undertaking, serving as a testament to the “modernity” of the Hall. Here, one encounters a tangible manifestation of that epistemological rupture with the Greco-Roman world—a caesura that the Early Renaissance did not fully perceive, but which resonates powerfully in the late sixteenth century. Conversely, this “modernity”—precipitated by the discovery of the Americas and the desire to transcend the metaphorical “Pillars of Hercules” preserved by the Middle Ages—possessed ambivalent qualities in the eyes of late-Cinquecento geographers, many of whom were also men of the Church.

The discourse is articulated with striking clarity: the geographical postulates of Ptolemy and other Hellenistic scholars were rendered obsolete, invalidated by the empirical evidence of recent transoceanic voyages. Furthermore, the monk-cartographers readily acknowledged that these perilous expeditions were motivated not by proselytism, but by a “desire for honor and riches”—secular passions inextricably linked to intrinsic ferocity. Consequently, for the populations of Central and Southern Africa or the New World, European expansion was far from a benevolent endeavor; rather, it established the precursors for the deportation and enslavement of entire peoples. Between 1550 and 1551, Charles V convened a Junta in Valladolid to deliberate upon the treatment of the indigenous populations. The debate hinged on a fundamental question: should their humanity be recognized and respected, as advocated by the Dominican bishop Bartolomé de las Casas, or should they be pitilessly subjugated as “non-persons,” as proposed by Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda? Within the Florentine maps—and specifically in the programmatic inscription transcribed below—one discerns a vestige of religious anxiety regarding the fate of African and Indigenous peoples.

However, the prevailing ethos of the Florentine cartographic project is not one of tormented pessimism; instead, it is characterized by a sense of exuberance regarding the vast expansion of maritime routes and intellectual horizons. Of the fifty-three total panels, thirty were executed by the Dominican Egnazio Danti between 1564 and 1575, while twenty-three were completed by the Olivetan monk Stefano Bonsignori between 1575 and 1586. Notably, only twenty-three panels derive from Ptolemy’s Geographia (2nd century AD); the remainder, pertaining to the New World and the “new parts of Africa,” were synthesized from contemporary sources.

As previously noted, both the project directors and the cartographers were ecclesiastics belonging to three distinct Orders. Their presence underscores the cohesion of a Christian-Humanist culture—simultaneously theological, historico-literary, and scientific—that had yet to experience terminal fragmentation, and which remained resilient despite the transformative image of the world. Furthermore, the enterprise serves as empirical evidence of the artistic and scientific primacy that Florence continued to exert during the waning years of the sixteenth century.

For pedagogical clarity, I provide below the transcription of the “programmatic” cartouche, which is of particular significance to the thematic considerations addressed herein.
