vertici del NSDAP, <em>Heinrich Himmler</em> di <strong>Peter Longerich</strong> (2008), non &#232; stata ancora tradotta in italiano. Per pi&#249; versi &#232; la biografia pi&#249; importante: perch&#233; applica per la prima volta il metodo che caratterizzer&#224; lo storico tedesco ancora in seguito, nelle ricerche su <strong>Hitler</strong> (2010; vd. <a href="https://substack.com/@micheledantini/note/c-181544430">qui</a>) e <strong>Goebbels</strong> (2015). L&#8217;impostazione biografica si intreccia qui alla storia &#8220;strutturale&#8221; in un singolare va-e-vieni di registri interpretativi diversi. Psicologia, storia sociale e culturale, storia politica, storia delle istituzioni e della burocrazia, storia di &#8220;meccanismi&#8221;, &#8220;mentalit&#224;&#8221; e contesti sovrapersonali concorrono a mettere a fuoco un &#8220;oggetto&#8221; storiografico singolarmente sfuggente e elusivo, quantomeno in apparenza: <strong>Himmler</strong> stesso, cui, fatta salva forse l&#8217;ostinata, intrigante ambizione, sembrano mancare pressoch&#233; tutti i requisiti dell&#8217;&#8221;eroe&#8221;, del capo politico-militare, che lui stesso ritiene invece di essere.</p><p>Negli anni del Reich, Himmler accumula cariche decisive e diventa l&#8217;uomo che, secondo solo a Hitler, modella pi&#249; in profondit&#224; l&#8217;ideologia del Terzo Reich. Ha la pi&#249; larga parte nei crimini del regime. Nominato Reichsf&#252;hrer SS nel 1929, diviene in seguito<strong> </strong>capo della polizia segreta (Gestapo, nel 1934), della polizia criminale (Kripo) e del RSHA, l&#8217;Ufficio per la sicurezza del Reich (Reichssicherheitshauptamt). Ministro degli interni, sul finire degli anni Trenta &#232; incaricato da Hitler di portare a termine la &#8220;germanizzazione&#8221; dei territori occupati, &#232; a capo dell&#8217;amministrazione dei Lager e responsabile della &#8220;soluzione finale&#8221;.</p><p>Membro della media borghesia monacense, di famiglia cattolica, Himmler non proviene dai piccoli ceti che soffrono di pi&#249; prima per la catastrofe bellica, poi per la povert&#224; del dopoguerra, infine per il crollo economico tedesco a cavallo di Venti e Trenta. Imputa invece all&#8217;educazione religiosa la responsabilit&#224; di impacci, difficolt&#224; e incertezze (anche sessuali) che hanno caratterizzato la sua infanzia e adolescenza; e che si propone di risolvere, &#8220;metallizzando&#8221; per cos&#236; dire la propria immagine, attraverso l&#8217;adesione a <strong>NSDAP</strong>. Lo troviamo, gi&#224; prima del 1933, tra i pi&#249; determinati avversari delle Chiese e in particolare dei cattolici &#8220;politici&#8221;, che si oppongono ai pogrom antiebraici.</p><p>Suprematista fanatico, mobilitato da luoghi comuni per lo pi&#249; spregevoli e confusi, va in cerca di vestigia di antiche religioni &#8220;teutoni&#8221; da contrapporre all&#8217;universalismo cristiano (gli Uffici vi e vii del Sicherheitdienst, pure al servizio di Himmler, diretto da <strong>Heydrich</strong>, si prestano a compiti di ricerca. Con essi collabora per qualche tempo <strong>Evola</strong>, che per&#242; non ha molto a che spartire con l&#8217;ideologia <em>v&#246;lkisch</em> e i culti germanici primitivi. Heydrich, che lo detesta, lo mette quindi alla porta). Tra 1922 e 1923, ormai affrancato dalla fede cattolica, si convince che la lotta sia principio cosmico, al pari dell&#8217;assoggettamento o sterminio di etnie considerate &#8220;recessive&#8221; e minori. In seguito accoglier&#224; tale principio, che prevede il genocidio, senza esitazione, quasi dolendosene, convinto che accoglierlo sia quasi un dovere. In un discorso ai Gruppenf&#252;hrer SS tenuto a Poznan nell&#8217;ottobre 1943, sinistro e famoso, chiarisce che si deve usare violenza non solo contro gli uomini di etnie &#8220;indesiderabili&#8221;, ebrei e slavi; ma anche contro le donne e i bambini. Chi cos&#236; non facesse, assicura, verrebbe meno a una sorta di imperativo categorico, lasciando vivi, a tutto danno della Germania, i futuri vendicatori dei padri assassinati.</p><p>Controllato, gentile, riservato, meticoloso sino all&#8217;invadenza o all&#8217;ossessione, estremamente suscettibile: cos&#236; lo descrivono testimonianze contemporanee o di poco successive alla sua morte. Dopo la guerra chi lo aveva conosciuto si mostrer&#224; ancora stupito che una persona a tal punto &#8220;decente&#8221; potesse rivelarsi un assassino di dimensioni mai sperimentate prima. &#8220;Decenza&#8221; (<em>Anst&#228;ndigkeit</em>) &#232; appunto un termine chiave per capire la personalit&#224; di Himmler: la sua duttilit&#224; e acquiescenza alle figure &#8220;paterne&#8221;, come il padre appunto (s&#236; autoritario, ma a cui lo lega comunque un rapporto n&#233; sanguinoso n&#233; esasperatamente conflittuale) e a Hitler; la sua alta considerazione delle &#8220;forme&#8221;; il desiderio complementare dell&#8221;indecenza&#8221;, sembre negata e che trova infine esaudimento nel rapporto con i non-Tedeschi.</p><p>L&#8217;ultimo periodo della vita di Himmler &#232; un susseguirsi di colpi di scena e catastrofici tentativi di inventarsi una <em>exit strategy</em>. Usa i suoi contatti internazionali, in particolare con il vice-presidente della Croce rossa internazionale <strong>Folke Bernadotte</strong>, per mostrarsi affidabile e favorevole alla pace, disposto anche a rilasciare i prigionieri dei campi in nome di chiss&#224; quale salvacondotto alleato. Mentre tratta il rilascio di ebrei, prigionieri di guerra e detenuti politici, ne avvia per&#242; il trasferimento forzato dai campi ubicati alla periferia del Reich, ormai prossimi a cadere in mano anglo-americana o sovietica, a campi pi&#249; interni: muoiono cos&#236; a decine di migliaia, sfiniti dalla marcia o fucilati dalle SS. Quando la sua disponibilit&#224; a prospettare la resa sembra sul punto di essere considerata da parte alleata, Hitler viene a sapere delle sue iniziative &#8220;diplomatiche&#8221;: lo rimuove allora da tutte la cariche e lo caccia persino da NSDAP. Tutto ci&#242; non ha alcuna rilevanza: accade cio&#232; quando, per la Germania, non esiste pi&#249; alcuna possibilit&#224; di trarsi fuori dal conflitto per via politica. Hitler si suicida il 30 aprile 1945, provando prima il cianuro sulla sua cagna Blondie; con lui muore <strong>Eva Braun</strong>. Il giorno successivo si suicidano <strong>Goebbels</strong> e la moglie Magda, che tolgono la vita anche ai loro sei bambini. Himmler cerca di trovare una via di fuga verso le Alpi. Scoperto e consegnato agli inglesi, si attiene dapprima a norme di collaborazione e &#8220;decenza&#8221;. Quindi si suicida il 23 maggio 1945.</p><p>&#8220;Formazione&#8221; e &#8220;individualit&#224;&#8221; del Reichsf&#252;hrer SS: da qui eravamo partiti. Sotto questo profilo la monografia, pur documentatissima, di Longerich non soddisfa del tutto. Si comprende bene il timore di fare apologia, sia pure attraverso l&#8217;iperbole inversa del &#8220;mostro&#8221;; e la scelta, conseguente a tale timore, di adottare un registro narrativo il pi&#249; sobrio e impersonale possibile, quasi annalistico: cronologia minuta e storia delle istituzioni relegano in secondo piano l&#8217;enormit&#224; di ci&#242; di cui qui si va narrando, e che prende forma appunto al momento della &#8220;soluzione finale&#8221;. La scelta di deportare gli ebrei sembra dapprima rispondere, dal punto di vista della dirigenza NSDAP, all&#8217;intenzione di disporre di essi come &#8220;ostaggi&#8221; del Reich, utili in una trattativa a distanza, tutta &#8220;implicita&#8221;, con gli Stati Uniti: ebrei tedeschi, balcanici, baltici e europeo-orientali, dunque, contro ebrei americani, che spingono Roosvelt a entrare in guerra. Si prospetta prima di deportare gli ebrei in Madagascar, poi nei territori sovietici occupati, poi ancora oltre, al di l&#224; degli Urali. In ogni caso la morte per sfinimento e fame &#232; un&#8217;assunzione tacita. E&#8217; Himmler a orientare la &#8220;soluzione finale&#8221; in direzioni immediatamente genocidarie, che non prevedono lavoro forzato, in occasione della <strong>Conferenza di Wansee</strong>, nel gennaio 1942, cui pure non prende personalmente parte (portata a termine la &#8220;trilogia&#8221; biografica, Longerich ha poi dedicato uno studio monografico alla Conferenza di Wansee, apparso nel 2016 nell&#8217;edizione originale tedesca). Si tratta, spiega Himmler, di trovare un modo il pi&#249; possibile &#8220;neutro&#8221; di sterminare gli ebrei - milioni, di ebrei, incluse donne e bambini, ricordiamolo; e poi detenuti politici, casi &#8220;psichiatrici&#8221;, prigionieri di guerra, Rom e omosessuali -, evitando conseguenze traumatiche alle SS, gli Einsatzgruppen o altre formazioni incaricate del compito. Le fucilazioni di massa si sono rivelate impraticabili (&#8220;indecenti&#8221;) per il danno psicologico che infliggono ai soldati tedeschi. Da qui il ricorso al gas, gi&#224; sperimentato con i malati di mente: prima con camion-cisterna, poi con le docce di Zyklon B.</p><p>Longerich ha pieno successo nel ridurre la statura di Himmler a quella di burocrate determinato e puntiglioso, raccapricciante e mediocre, sempre di nuovo impegnato nella riduzione dell&#8217;Orrore a efficienza. <strong>Eichmann</strong>, di cui conosciamo le deposizioni al processo tenutosi a Gerusalemme nel 1961, sembra in qualche modo essere stato il modello storico-psicologico della ricostruzione. Al pi&#249;, Longerich ci mostra, di Himmler, tratti riposti, autoparodistici e come al limite della scissione, quando espone le circostanze dello sfrontato voltafaccia finale. Mi chiedo, per&#242;: si ritiene cos&#236; di aver compreso, se non tutto, la gran parte? </p><p>Il Male, nel testo di Longerich, &#232; &#8220;banale&#8221; al punto da non essere oggetto di trattazione (cito qui <strong>Arendt</strong>). A narrarlo, se non a comprenderlo, sembra sufficiente un fitto reticolo di date e acronimi, una sorta di &#8220;ingegnerizzazione&#8221; dei dati, per cos&#236; dire, che aiuta l&#8217;autore, Longerich stesso, a distanziare il piano emozionale; e in cui non entra l&#8217;atrocit&#224; unica e insensata del caso singolo, del dettaglio, della morte individuale. N&#233; un racconto, mai, n&#233; una testimonianza intervengono a lacerare la routine storiografica; a dare voce al nostro inestinguibile allibimento e stupore. Conosciamo il punto di vista di Himmler, le razionalizzazioni che lui stesso si d&#224; in chiave di distacco emotivo e &#8220;decenza&#8221;. Non udiamo la voce delle vittime. Di nuovo. Questa narrazione, cos&#236; riluttante a registrare il lamento, &#232; <em>davvero</em> esauriente?</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" In many respects, it stands as the most vital of the three. It was here that the German historian first deployed the methodological synthesis that would define his career: a sophisticated &#8220;push-and-pull&#8221; between individual biography and &#8220;structural&#8221; history. Through a multi-layered lens&#8212;intertwining psychology, social and cultural history, and the cold mechanics of institutional bureaucracy&#8212;Longerich attempts to pin down a historiographical subject that is remarkably elusive. Himmler himself, stripped of his own delusions, seems to lack almost every quality of the &#8220;heroic&#8221; political or military leader he imagined himself to be, possessing instead only a dogged and unsettlingly vacant ambition.</p><p>During the years of the Reich, Himmler amassed a staggering array of decisive portfolios, becoming the man who, second only to Hitler, most profoundly sculpted the ideology of the Third Reich. His hand is visible in the regime&#8217;s most heinous crimes. Appointed Reichsf&#252;hrer-SS in 1929, he subsequently seized control of the secret police (the Gestapo, in 1934), the criminal police (Kripo), and the RSHA (Reichssicherheitshauptamt). As Minister of the Interior in the late 1930s, he was charged by Hitler with the &#8220;Germanization&#8221; of occupied territories; he oversaw the administration of the concentration camps and served as the ultimate technician of the &#8220;Final Solution.&#8221;</p><p>Born into the Munich haute bourgeoisie and raised in a devout Catholic household, Himmler did not emerge from the desperate lower-middle class that bore the brunt of the Great War&#8217;s aftermath or the hyperinflation of the late twenties. Instead, he blamed his religious upbringing for the awkwardness, sexual insecurities, and general timidity of his youth. His solution was to &#8220;metallize&#8221; his persona, forging a new, hardened identity through the NSDAP. Even before 1933, he was among the most vitriolic opponents of the Church&#8212;specifically targeting &#8220;political&#8221; Catholics who dared to oppose anti-Semitic pogroms.</p><p>A fanatical supremacist fueled by a collection of wretched and muddled clich&#233;s, Himmler sought the vestiges of ancient &#8220;Teutonic&#8221; religions to counter Christian universalism. (He even drafted the scholars of the SD&#8212;under Heydrich&#8217;s command&#8212;into this pursuit. For a time, they collaborated with Julius Evola, though the Italian traditionalist had little patience for v&#246;lkisch ideology or primitive Germanic cults; Heydrich, who loathed him, eventually showed him the door). By 1923, having severed his ties to the Catholic faith, Himmler became convinced that struggle was a cosmic principle, as was the subjugation or extermination of &#8220;recessive&#8221; ethnicities. He would later embrace genocide without hesitation, viewing it with a chilling, self-sacrificial sense of &#8220;duty.&#8221; In his infamous October 1943 speech to the SS Gruppenf&#252;hrer in Poznan, he made it clear that violence must be visited not only upon &#8220;undesirable&#8221; men&#8212;Jews and Slavs&#8212;but also upon women and children. To fail in this, he argued, was to fail a categorical imperative; to leave them alive was to leave behind the &#8220;avengers&#8221; of their fathers, a luxury Germany could not afford.</p><p>Contrived, polite, reserved, and meticulous to the point of obsession&#8212;yet hyper-sensitive to any perceived slight&#8212;Himmler was described by contemporaries as a man of baffling &#8220;decency&#8221; (Anst&#228;ndigkeit). After the war, those who knew him remained stunned that such a seemingly &#8220;decent&#8221; man could facilitate slaughter on an unprecedented scale. Anst&#228;ndigkeit is, in fact, the cipher for Himmler&#8217;s personality: it explains his pliability toward father figures (both his biological father and Hitler), his reverence for &#8220;form,&#8221; and his channeled &#8220;indecency&#8221; toward the non-German &#8220;Other.&#8221;</p><p>The final chapter of Himmler&#8217;s life was a frantic series of catastrophic attempts to engineer an exit strategy. He leveraged international contacts&#8212;notably Count Folke Bernadotte of the International Red Cross&#8212;to present himself as a reliable man of peace, dangling the release of camp prisoners as bait for Allied safe passage. Yet, even as he negotiated, he ordered the forced transfer of prisoners from the periphery of the Reich to its interior to prevent their liberation. Tens of thousands perished on these death marches, executed by the SS or collapsing from exhaustion. When Hitler learned of these &#8220;diplomatic&#8221; overtures, he stripped Himmler of all titles and expelled him from the party. It was a meaningless gesture; by then, Germany&#8217;s political options had evaporated. Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945; Goebbels and his wife Magda followed suit the next day, after murdering their six children. Himmler, attempting to flee toward the Alps, was captured by the British. He maintained his mask of &#8220;decency&#8221; and cooperation for a short time before committing suicide on May 23, 1945.</p><p>We began with the question of the Reichsf&#252;hrer-SS&#8217;s &#8220;formation&#8221; and &#8220;individuality.&#8221; On this front, Longerich&#8217;s impeccably researched monograph leaves something to be desired. One senses the historian&#8217;s dread of slipping into apology&#8212;even through the &#8220;inverse hyperbole&#8221; of the monster&#8212;which leads him to adopt a narrative register that is surgically sober, almost annalistic. The minute chronology and institutional history tend to relegate the enormity of the events to the background.</p><p>The decision to deport the Jews, for instance, is presented initially as a strategic gambit to use them as &#8220;hostages&#8221; in an implicit negotiation with the United States. Only when plans for Madagascar or the Urals proved untenable did the &#8220;Final Solution&#8221; pivot toward immediate genocide. Longerich successfully reduces Himmler to the stature of a determined, mediocre bureaucrat, forever busy translating horror into efficiency. One senses that Adolf Eichmann, as presented during the 1961 Jerusalem trial, served as the psychological template for this reconstruction.</p><p>Yet, one wonders: is this enough to truly comprehend? In Longerich&#8217;s text, Evil is so &#8220;banal&#8221; (to borrow Arendt&#8217;s term) that it ceases to be an object of inquiry. The &#8220;engineering&#8221; of data and the dense thicket of acronyms allow the author to distance the emotional plane, but in doing so, the unique, senseless atrocity of the individual death is lost. No testimony or narrative arc is permitted to puncture the historiographical routine or to give voice to our inextinguishable shock. We see the world through Himmler&#8217;s eyes&#8212;his rationalizations, his detachment, his &#8220;decency.&#8221; We do not, however, hear the victims.
